The first successful airplane takeoff from a warship occurred on November 14, 1910. Civilian aviator Eugene Ely piloted a Curtiss Pusher biplane off an 80-foot wooden platform built over the bow of the light cruiser USS Birmingham in Hampton Roads, Virginia.
