A Marine helicopter which has the President aboard uses the call sign “Marine One”. Located in the Washington DC area. Nicknamed “Nighthawks”. They are headquartered at Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico, Virginia, and maintain detachments at Naval Support Facility Anacostia in Washington, D.C. and Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility in Maryland. The Marine Corps VH-60N is a helicopter transport for the President of the United States, Vice President, and other visiting heads of state. It has seating provisions for 10 passengers and the aircrew consists of a pilot, co-pilot, crew chief, and a communication system operator. The Sikorsky VH-3D “Sea King” is the primary short-range transport aircraft for the President, Vice President, White House cabinet and staff. Operated by Marine Corps aviators from HMX-1, the Sea King includes Day/night/all-weather operations. The Bell Boeing V-22 “Osprey” is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft.
Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico (MCAF Quantico) is a United States Marine Corps airfield located within Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. It was commissioned in 1919 and is currently home to HMX-1, the squadron that flies the President of the United States. The airfield is also known as Turner Field, after Colonel Thomas C. Turner, a veteran Marine aviator and the second director of Marine Corps Aviation, who lost his life in Haiti in 1931.
