Additionally, the 87 MDG provides 24/7/365 ambulance services and all-hazards medical response in support of emergency requirements across the 42,000-acre installation, which includes multiple airfields and ranges. 87 MDG was established as part of the 87th Troop Carrier Wing at Atterbury AFB, IN on 26 May 1952, activated in the Reserve on 15 June 1952, inactivated on 1 February 1953, and activated as part of the 87 ABW on 3 March 2009 when JB MDL was formed IAW BRAC requirements. McGuire is named after Maj Tommy B. McGuire (P-38/”Pudgy”) and Lakehurst was home/site of the Hindenburg crash. JB MDL is in the Pine Barrens of NJ, in the center of two of America’s greatest cities and symbols of freedom/liberty–45 minutes from Philadelphia (Liberty Bell) and an hour from NYC (Statue of Liberty)–and adjacent to the famous Jersey Shore.
