42 Torpedo Bomber Squadron serves as the RAF’s operational conversion unit for the Poseidon MRA1 and Wedgetail AWE1 based at RAF Lossiemouth Scotland. 42 (TB) Squadron was formed in 1916, serving on both the Western and Austro – Italian Fronts. During the Second World War, the squadron fought in the European Theatre and during the Burma Campaign. During the Cold War, 42 (TB) Squadron flew Shackleton and Nimrod MPA until 1992 when the squadron became the Nimrod OCU until 2011. 42 (TB) Squadron was reformed in 2023 and has provided exceptional training for all RAF P-8 Poseidon crews since and will provide the same level of training for future Wedgetail crews.

No. 42 Squadron, also known as No. 42 (Torpedo Bomber) Squadron or No. 42 (TB) Squadron, is a squadron of the Royal Air Force. It reformed at RAF Lossiemouth on 21 September 2023 as the operational conversion unit for both the Boeing Poseidon MRA1 and Boeing Wedgetail AEW1. The squadron served during the First World War as an army co-operation squadron and during the Second World War in various roles. Between 1992 and 2010, it was based at RAF Kinloss as the operational conversion unit for the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod MR2, until the retirement of the aircraft in March 2010.

Royal Air Force Lossiemouth or RAF Lossiemouth is a military airfield located on the western edge of the town of Lossiemouth in Moray, north-east Scotland. Lossiemouth is one of the largest and busiest fast-jet stations in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and known for its proximity to flight training areas in Scotland and its favourable local flying conditions. Since the closure of RAF Leuchars in 2015, Lossiemouth has been the only operational RAF station in Scotland. It is one of two main operating bases for the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 in the United Kingdom. It is home to four front-line fast jet units which operate the Typhoon: No. 1 Squadron, No. 2 Squadron, No. 6 Squadron and No. 9 Squadron. All four Squadrons contribute to the Quick Reaction Alert (Interceptor) North capability which provides continuous protection of UK airspace.
