The Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC), established in September 2008, is an independent and multinational program comprised of 12 partner nations. They own three Boeing C-17A Globemaster III aircraft which are operated by the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW). SAC is based at the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF) Pápa Air Base in Pápa, Hungary. The SAC nations consist of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) members Hungary, Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and the United States; as well as Partnership for Peace (PfP) nations Finland and Sweden.
The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft. It was developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) from the 1980s to the early 1990s by McDonnell Douglas. The C-17 carries forward the name of two previous piston-engined military cargo aircraft, the Douglas C-74 Globemaster and the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II. The C-17 commonly performs strategic airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo throughout the world; additional roles include tactical airlift, medical evacuation and airdrop duties.
