Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (General Mitchell Air National Guard Base) is a civil–military airport 5 nautical miles south of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2025–2029, in which it is categorized as a medium-hub primary commercial service facility. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport covers 2,314 acres and has five asphalt and concrete runways. The airport is named in honor of United States Army General Billy Mitchell, who was raised in Milwaukee and is often regarded as the father of the United States Air Force. Along with being the primary airport for Milwaukee, Mitchell International is also used by travelers throughout Southern and Eastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. Since March 1941, the airport’s weather station has been used as the official point for Milwaukee weather observations and records by the National Weather Service, whose area office is located in Sullivan.

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is an American military aerial refueling tanker aircraft that was developed from the Boeing 367-80 prototype, alongside the Boeing 707 airliner. It has a narrower fuselage and is shorter than the 707. Boeing gave the aircraft the internal designation of Model 717 (number later assigned to a different Boeing aircraft). The KC-135 was the United States Air Force’s first jet-powered refueling tanker and replaced the KC-97 Stratofreighter.
