Located in Antarctica, the Coldest, most Austere and Desolate Continent on the planet, McMurdo Station, Antarctica is the main United States Research and Science Support Station on the Continent. A continent that is 98% covered in Ice and has no permanent residents. Occupied year round by science and support staff, McMurdo Station is located just 750 miles from the Geographic South.
During the winter, with its 24 hours of Darkness temperatures can average between -30f and -58f. Phoenix Airfield and its hard-packed snow runway was opened in 2017 as a replacement for the well-used and worn Pegasus White Ice Runway and is the United States only year-round runway in Antarctica.
On August 25th, 2018, with less than 24 hours notice, and In the face of rapidly deteriorating weather conditions, and a -94 degrees Fahrenheit Wind Chill on the runway, the 304th EAS conducted the coldest medevac in history, evacuating two patients, one of whom was critically ill, from McMurdo Station to Christchurch New Zealand for treatment.
