The Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) is a multinational organization made up of 12 nations: Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, and the United States. SAC’s operational unit is the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW), which operates three C-17 strategic airlift aircraft from Pápa Air Base in Northwest Hungary, about midway between Hungary’s capital, Budapest, and Vienna, Austria. The HAW Initial Cadre began work at Pápa Air Base in October 2008 and began flight operations in July 2009 when the wing officially activated; the HAW became fully operational in 2012. The HAW has a unique organizational structure and conducts the full spectrum of C-17 missions: air land, air refueling and air drop.
The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft. It was developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) from the 1980s to the early 1990s by McDonnell Douglas.
