McChord Field, 97th Airlift Squadron 75 Years Heritage Art.

The 97th Airlift Squadron (97 AS) is part of the 446th Airlift Wing (Reserve) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. It operates the C-17A Globemaster III supporting the USAF global reach mission worldwide. McChord is just south of Tacoma, Washington and 45 minutes south of Seattle. The squadron was formed as the 97th Troop Carrier Squadron on May 25, 1943. Over the next 75 years, the squadron’s role transitioned from airlift, to fighter-bomber, then back to airlift.  The 97th has operated over  a dozen aircraft types since the Normandy invasion, primarily the C-47 Dakota, F-51 Mustang, C-119 Flying Boxcar, C-124 Globemaster II, C-141 Starlifter, and the C-17 Globemaster III.
