Macdill AFB 50th ARS vintage style military aviation travel poster art by – Squadron Posters!
The 50th Air Refueling Squadron is a unit of the US Air Force, assigned to the 6th Operations Group, 6th Air Refueling Wing at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. It operates the Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft conducting air refueling missions. It is a former USAF C-130H squadron that was inactivated in April 2016. It was previously one of four operational flying Air Mobility Command squadrons stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas under the 19th Airlift Wing. The Fightin’ 5-0 along with sister squadrons, the 41st, 53d and 61st Airlift Squadrons, was assigned to the 19th Operations Group. During the Korean War, the 50th flew numerous aircraft, including the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar. The unit was among the first to fly the C-130 Hercules. In 1967, the 50th was redesignated a Tactical Airlift Squadron, flying sorties supporting the Vietnam Conflict. In 1973, the 50th moved to Little Rock AFB, AR, where it established itself as one of the premier Airlift Squadrons. The 50 AS was engaged in numerous conflicts including Operations Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Inherent Resolve, and flew humanitarian relief missions supporting Thailand tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and Haitian earthquake victims. In 2017 the 50th was redesignated as an air refueling squadron and relocated back to where it originated, in Tampa, FL. The 50 ARS continues to uphold the motto, “Givin ‘em hell”, supporting worldwide operations from MacDill AFB and forward operating locations around the globe.
MacDill Air Force Base is an active United States Air Force installation located 4 miles south-southwest of downtown Tampa, Florida. The “host wing” for MacDill AFB is the 6th Air Refueling Wing, assigned to the Eighteenth Air Force of the Air Mobility Command. MacDill became an Air Mobility Command installation in 1996 and home to the 6th Air Refueling Wing, its 310th Airlift Squadron flying the C-37A, and its 50th Air Refueling Squadron and 91st Air Refueling Squadron flying the KC-135. The 6 ARW is further augmented by the Air Force Reserve Command’s 927th Air Refueling Wing and 63d Air Refueling Squadron also flying KC-135s.
