“Out of the clear blue of the western sky comes…SKY KING!” Many, many future aviators were bitten by the bug while watching the 1950s TV serial “Sky King.” As TV’s Flying Cowboy, Sky and his niece, Penny, provided wholesome adventure and the first aircraft to appear in a starring role—the Songbird! Portraying one of the three different aircraft used for the show, Ron Finger’s portrait of “Songbird III,” a Cessna 310D, was recently commissioned by FLYING Magazine for their “Ultimate Issue” seen HERE.

The Cessna 310D is a twin-engine light aircraft produced by Cessna, introduced in the late 1950s. Known for its sleek design and powerful performance, the 310D features upgraded engines and improved aerodynamics compared to earlier models. It is primarily used for personal, corporate, and small cargo transport, offering a smooth and reliable flight experience. With seating for up to six passengers and a cruising speed of around 200 mph, the Cessna 310D became a popular choice for private owners and small businesses looking for efficient air travel. Its distinctive twin-tail design and durable build made it a standout in general aviation.
Sky King was one of the first radio adventure serials to make the jump to TV in the 1950s. It featured the adventures of Schuyler “Sky” King and his niece, Penny, and nephew, Clipper, living on the Flying Crown ranch in Arizona. King was a former military aviator and was often called upon to catch the bad guys and save the day, which usually involved fancy flying in a twin-engine Cessna named Songbird. The show was sponsored by Peter Pan peanut butter and later Nabisco. Sky King incorporated several aircraft during the show’s run, starting with a Cessna T-50 Bobcat. Later, several models of the Cessna 310 were used. Each airplane had a crown and the name of the ranch painted on the fuselage. Check out this stunning Songbird III Art by – Squadron Posters!
