The 10th Space Operations Squadron (10 SOPS), Headquartered at Point Mugu, California, is the United States Space Force unit responsible for operating the Mobile User Objective System and Ultra-High Frequency Follow-On satellite constellations, providing global communications to the United States Armed Forces. In addition to its Point Mugu Headquarters (HQ) facility, 10 SOPS operates three remote telemetry, tracking, and commanding (TT&C) facilities and a backup Satellite Operations Center (SOC): 10 SOPS Laguna Peak Facility, located atop Laguna Peak just three miles from 10 SOPS Headquarters, supports the Space-Ground Link System (SGLS) satellite TT&C operations. 10 SOPS Detachment ALFA, established in 1962, is located at Prospect Harbor, Maine. Detachment ALFA supports satellite TT&C through Space-Ground Link System and Extremely High-Frequency (EHF) capabilities. The 10th SOPS Detachment Charlie, established in 1993, is located at Finegayan, Guam and serves as 10th SOPS’ third satellite Earth station. Detachment Charlie completes 10th SOPS’ nearly global coverage of the geosynchronous satellite belt and has SGLS and EHF TT&C capabilities. The 10th SOPS Detachment Delta is located at Schriever Space Force Base just outside Colorado Springs, Colorado. It serves as the backup SOC and dates back to 1988. Detachment DELTA shares the daily satellite operations load with the HQ SOC.
Prospect Harbor Naval Satellite Operations Station, Maine: this site covers just a few acres, at the tip of Prospect Harbor Point, where a half-dozen small buildings, including the old lighthouse keepers residence, and two small radomes, are used by naval personnel to control and monitor the worldwide satellite system. The site was first established by the Navy at the Corea antenna site of the Naval Security Group Winter Harbor, which operated from 1935 to 2001, from two sites nearby, at Corea and Schoodic Point, on either side of Prospect Harbor. Operations were moved to this former Coast Guard site at Prospect Harbor in 1964, and the activities remained independent from those at Winter Harbor. These are some of the several independent military communication sites, active and inactive, that have been established to take advantage of Maine’s location on the North Atlantic, and its proximity to the northern European and Russian states on the other side of the water.
