The 87th Medical Group (87 MDG) is part of the 87th Air Base Wing at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JB MDL). Their dynamic and complex mission is centered on “ready medics delivering a medically-fit Joint force…optimizing the health of all we serve” at DoD’s only tri-Service joint base. As the lone military treatment facility (MTF) at JB MDL, this team of 400 Air Force-only medics provides a range of primary and specialty healthcare services vital to the readiness of 5 AF Wings and 88 mission partners (includes AF Expeditionary Center & Expeditionary Operations School, 87 ABW (host), 305 AMW (C-17/KC-10), 621 CRW (AF’s only Contingency Response Wg), 514 AMW (C-17/KC-10), 108 Wg (KC-135), Army Support Activity, 99th Readiness Division, Navy Support Activity, NAVAIR, VR-64 (C-130), USCG Atlantic Strike Team, Marine Aircraft Group-49 (MV-22, CH-53, AH-1, KC-130) and 68,000 beneficiaries, including nearly 17,000 empaneled Total Force Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, civilians, retirees, and their families (*see more below). *The 87TH MDG also supports nearly 200,000 transient Total Force personnel training at JB MDL each year. Additionally, the 87 MDG provides 24/7/365 ambulance services and all-hazards medical response in support of emergency requirements across the 42,000-acre installation, which includes multiple airfields and ranges. 87 MDG was established as part of the 87th Troop Carrier Wing at Atterbury AFB, IN on 26 May 1952, activated in the Reserve on 15 June 1952, inactivated on 1 February 1953, and activated as part of the 87 ABW on 3 March 2009 when JB MDL was formed IAW BRAC requirements. McGuire is named after Maj Tommy B. McGuire (P-38/”Pudgy”) and Lakehurst was home/site of the Hindenburg crash. JB MDL is in the Pine Barrens of NJ, in the center of two of America’s greatest cities and symbols of freedom/liberty–45 minutes from Philadelphia (Liberty Bell) and an hour from NYC (Statue of Liberty)–and adjacent to the famous Jersey Shore.
