The 21st Airlift Squadron (21 AS) is a C-17A Globemaster III squadron located at Travis AFB, California. The base is 45 minutes West of Sacramento, 45 minutes East of Napa, and an hour East of San Francisco. The Pacific Ocean is a few hours to the West and the Sierra Mountains are to the East. The 21AS “BeeLiners”, are a part of the global reach mission flying all over the world. They are the Air Force’s busiest C-17 squadron with the most hours flown annually.

21st Airlift Squadron Nose Art by – Squadron Posters!

The 21st Airlift Squadron is part of the 60th Air Mobility Wing at Travis Air Force Base, California. It operates C-17 Globemaster III aircraft carrying out United States Air Force global transport missions, duties which involve airlift and airdrop missions as well as provision of services and support in order to promote quality of life for both soldiers and civilians in situations requiring humanitarian aid. First formed as the 21st Transport Squadron at Archerfield Airport, Australia on 3 April 1942. Activated in the wake of the United States withdrawal from the Philippines, the squadron was formed with a mixture of personnel withdrawn from Clark Field and some reinforcements which had arrived in Australia but did not see combat in the Philippines. The squadron was hastily put together with some impressed civilian Douglas DC-2s and DC-3s.

Travis Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base under the operational control of Air Mobility Command, located three miles east of the central business district of the city of Fairfield, in Solano County, California. Situated at the southwestern edge of the Sacramento Valley and known as the “Gateway to the Pacific,” Travis Air Force Base handles more cargo and passenger traffic through its airport than any other military air terminal in the United States.
