On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers achieved the first successful powered, controlled, and sustained airplane flight at Kill Devil Hills, four miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Piloted by Orville Wright, the first flight of the Wright Flyer, December 17, 1903, with Wilbur Wright running at the wingtip. The Wright Flyer took off at 10:35 a.m., stayed aloft for 12 seconds, and traveled 120 feet (Captured in this historic photo).
