In the United States, the 24-hour clock is often referred to as “Military Time”. The 24-hour clock is commonly use only in certain fields, like aviation, navigation, tourism, meteorology, astronomy, computing, logistics, emergency services, hospitals, and the military, where the use of the 12-hour notation are deemed too inconvenient, cumbersome, or dangerous. “Hurry up and wait” is a common military expression for being rushed to complete a task or arrive at a destination early, only to sit around doing nothing for hours because of delays, poor planning, or layered command structures. The Modern 24-hour clock is the convention of timekeeping in which the day runs from midnight to midnight and is divided into 24 hours. This is indicated by the hours (and minutes) passed since midnight, from 00(:00) to 23(:59), with 24(:00) as an option to indicate the end of the day. This system, as opposed to the 12-hour clock, is the most commonly used time notation in the world today, and is used by the international standard ISO 8601. A number of countries, particularly English speaking, use the 12-hour clock, or a mixture of the 24- and 12-hour time systems. In countries where the 12-hour clock is dominant, some professions prefer to use the 24-hour clock. For example, in the practice of medicine, the 24-hour clock is generally used in documentation of care as it prevents any ambiguity as to when events occurred in a patient’s medical history.
“Hurry up and wait” is a phrase used to refer to the situation in which one is forced to hurry in order to complete a certain task, or arrive at a certain destination, by a specified time; only for nothing to happen at that time, often because other required tasks are still awaiting completion. The phrase may have originated in the United States military in the 1940s. Many U.S. military veterans, in particular, consider this phrase to be synonymous with military culture.
