The 728th Airlift Squadron (728 AS) is a United States Air Force Reserve squadron, assigned to the 446th Operations Group, stationed at McChord Field, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. It operates the C-17A Globemaster III in support world-wide tactical and strategic airlift missions. The squadron was first activated as the 728th Bombardment Squadron in 1943, flying the B-17 Flying Fortress in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. It earned a Distinguished Unit Citation (DUC) during an attack on a German Jet fighter base near Kaltenkirchenin April 1945. The squadron name is “The Flying Knights”.
