Stood up in 2023 at MCBH Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, VMGR-153 is a United States Marine Corps KC-130J squadron. The squadron is a part of Marine Aircraft Group 24 (MAG-24), 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW) and provides both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aerial refueling capabilities to support Fleet Marine Force (FMF) air operations world-wide in addition to assault air transport of personnel, equipment, and supplies. During World War II, the squadron was under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 25 and the South Pacific Combat Air Transport Command (SCAT).

The Lockheed Martin (previously Lockheed)Â KC-130Â is a family of the extended-range tanker version of the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. The KC-130J is the latest variant operated by the United States Marine Corps, with 48 delivered out of 79 ordered. It replaced older KC-130F, KC-130R, and KC-130T variants for aerial refueling. USMC reserve unit, VMGR-452 operated 12 KC-130T aircraft until May 2021; this was the last USMC reserve unit that operated the legacy KC-130s, completing the Corps’ transition to the more advanced Super Hercules.
The newest Hercules, the KC-130J, shares 55 percent of the same airframe as preceding models, but in fact is a greatly improved airplane. It is based on the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules and provides significant increases in operational capability and performance margins over preceding KC-130F/R/T (legacy) aircraft. Additionally, The KC-130J reduces cost of ownership through system reliability and reduced maintenance man-hours per flight hour. The new HC-130J combat rescue tanker and MC-130J special operations tanker are both derived from a KC-130J baseline.
