The 72nd Aerial Refueling Squadron (72nd ARS) is part of the 434th Aerial Refueling Wing at Grissom Air Reserve Base in Indiana. The squadron operates the KC-135R Stratotanker and traces its roots back to 1943, when it was established during World War II as a Troop Carrier unit flying C-47s and towing CG-4A Waco gliders. Located amid the cornfields of northern Indiana, the region’s strong racing culture influences the squadron’s identity. The 72nd ARS is known for its “Dark Side” theme, not in a fictional sense, but as a reflection of its proud underdog mindset and resilient spirit.

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is an American military aerial refueling tanker aircraft that was developed from the Boeing 367-80 prototype, alongside the Boeing 707 airliner. It has a narrower fuselage and is shorter than the 707. Boeing gave the aircraft the internal designation of Model 717 (number later assigned to a different Boeing aircraft). The KC-135 was the United States Air Force‘s first jet-powered refueling tanker and replaced the KC-97 Stratofreighter. The KC-135 was initially tasked with refueling strategic bombers, but it was used extensively in the Vietnam War and later conflicts such as Operation Desert Storm to extend the range and endurance of US tactical fighters and bombers.
Grissom Air Reserve Base is a United States Air Force base, located about 12 miles north of Kokomo in Cass and Miami counties in Indiana. The facility was established as a U.S. Navy installation, Naval Air Station Bunker Hill, in 1942 and was an active Air Force installation, Bunker Hill Air Force Base from 1954 to 1968, and Grissom Air Force Base from 1968 to 1994. Pursuant to a BRAC 1991 decision, the installation was downsized to an Air Force Reserve installation and renamed Grissom Air Reserve Base.
