The 16th Airlift Squadron (16AS) is part of the 437th Air Mobility Wing at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. It operates the C-17A Globemaster III supporting the USAF global reach mission world wide. The squadron name is the “Lions”. The 16AS was the original SOLLII squadron.
Joint Base Charleston is a United States military facility located partly in the City of North Charleston, South Carolina and partly in the City of Goose Creek, South Carolina . The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force 628th Air Base Wing, Air Mobility Command (AMC).
The C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft. It was developed for the United States Air Force from the 1980s to the early 1990s. The C-17 carries forward the name of two previous piston-engined military cargo aircraft, the C-74 Globemaster and the C-124 Globemaster II. The C-17 commonly performs tactical and strategic airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo throughout the world; additional roles include medical evacuation and airdrop duties. It was designed to replace the C-141 Starlifter, and also fulfill some of the duties of the C-5 Galaxy, freeing the C-5 fleet for outsize cargo.
