The 628th Civil Engineer Squadron, with its 366 military and civilian personnel, is responsible for directing design, construction, maintenance, and repair activities on $2.6B of base facility and infrastructure systems. Their responsibilities cover 6,500 acres, 5 million square feet of floor space and 3.7 million square yards of pavement. In addition, they provide base fire protection services, manage 716 family housing units, execute an annual budget of over $50 million, provide base disaster preparedness support, provide comprehensive environmental management services, and direct explosive ordnance disposal for local and worldwide Department of Defense and Presidential support requirements. The 628 CES also provides full spectrum infrastructure and fire protection support to the North Field training complex. 

The C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft. It was developed for the United States Air Force from the 1980s to the early 1990s. The C-17 commonly performs tactical and strategic airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo throughout the world; additional roles include medical evacuation and airdrop duties.
