Apra Harbor Guam Sub

Apra Harbor Guam Sub Art.

Apra Harbor is a deep-water port on the western side of the United States territory of Guam. The harbor is formed by Orote Peninsula in the south and Cabras Island in the north. To the south, the harbor narrows and then widens again to form an inner harbor. The southern end of the harbor is the location of Naval Base Guam, a strategic U.S. naval base located on Apra Harbor. It is part of Joint Region Marianas, which is a Naval-controlled installation which was combined with Andersen Air Force Base in 2009. Naval Base Guam is home of Commander Submarine Squadron 15, Coast Guard Sector Guam and Naval Special Warfare Unit One and supports 28 other tenant commands. It is the home base to dozens of Pacific Command, United States Pacific Fleet, Seventh Fleet, and other units.

The Los Angeles class (also known as the 688 class) is a class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSN) in US Naval service. They represent two generations and close to half a century of the U.S. attack submarine fleet. As of late 2015, 39 of the class are still in commission and 23 retired from service. Of the 23 retired boats, 14 of them were laid up half way (approximately 17–18 years) through their projected lifespans due to their midlife reactor refuelings being cancelled.
