The 549th Combat Training Squadron “Warbats” hosts Green Flag-West exercises, a realistic air-surface integration combat training exercise involving the air forces of the United States and its allies. It is primarily conducted in conjunction with U.S. Army Combat Training Center exercises at Fort Irwin, California. It is a close air support and joint exercise administered by the United States Air Force Air Warfare Center and Nellis Air Force Base through the 549th Combat Training Squadron. These fast-paced battles, intense real-time command, control and communications requirements, and visual simulations of armor, anti-armor, artillery, and air defense weapons systems combine to present a highly realistic training environment for fighter pilots, forward air controllers, and air support operations squadrons. Originally stood up as Air Warrior in 1981, the exercise became “Green Flag” in the early 2000s.

Nellis Air Force Base, located just northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the most iconic and strategically important installations in the U.S. Air Force. Home to the USAF Warfare Center, Nellis is renowned for hosting advanced training exercises like Red Flag and Green Flag, providing unparalleled combat readiness for U.S. and allied aircrews. The base supports testing, tactics development, and operational training across a wide spectrum of airpower disciplines, making it a cornerstone of modern air combat innovation.
Green Flag-West is a large force, live-fly Joint exercise that provides advanced, realistic and relevant air-to-surface integration warfighter training in a robust contested, degraded, and operationally limited environment. It is primarily executed in conjunction with US Army exercises at the National Training Center at Ft Irwin, CA, but also trains against sea-based threats in order to provide multi-domain air-to-surface fires training. Green Flag-West is administered by the US Air Force Warfare Center through the 549th Combat Training Squadron at Nellis AFB and the 12th Combat Training Squadron at Ft Irwin.
The Green Flag mission begins long before tactical operations occur on the battlefield. 549th CTS and 12th CTS planners begin designing the exercise approximately six months before forces arrive to begin maneuvers. Air Combat Command determines which, and how many flying units will participate and the 549th CTS works with those units to build an integrated plan to maximize joint and individual unit training.
