RAF Upper Heyford was a British military (Royal Air Force) base where many American Airman came to serve and create lasting memories of the vibrant communities it once was a part of, in Oxfordshire England. Since it closed in 1994, many service members still talk about the lasting friendships and fond memories made at this base. The F-111 Aardvark was a supersonic, medium-range interdictor and tactical strike aircraft that also filled the roles of strategic bomber, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare in its various versions.

Royal Air Force Upper Heyford or more simply RAF Upper Heyford is a former Royal Air Force station located 5 miles (8 km) north-west of Bicester near the village of Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, England. In the Second World War the airfield was used by RAF Bomber Command. During the Cold War, Upper Heyford was one of the former RAF bases chosen to house the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command nuclear-capable bombers on 90-day TDY (Temporary Duty) deployments until 1959, SAC Reflex Alert deployments from 1959 until 1965, from 1966 United States Air Forces in Europe tactical reconnaissance aircraft, and from 1970 General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark strike aircraft.
The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark is a retired supersonic, medium-range, multirole combat aircraft. Production models of the F-111 had roles that included attack (e.g. interdiction), strategic bombing (including nuclear weapons capabilities), reconnaissance and electronic warfare. Aardvark comes from a South African animal that has a long nose and hugs the terrain. It is an Afrikaans word that translates literally as “earth pig” — hence the aircraft’s “Pig” nickname during its Australian service.
