1st Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment is located in Houston, Texas under the 36th Combat Aviation Brigade. The Attack Battalion primarily operates the AH – 64D Apache Longbow. Subordinate units within Texas are B/1 – 114th which operates the UH-72 Lakota helicopter. Other detachments serve in partner states including A/1 – 149th in Tupelo, MS. Originally organized as the 149th Aviation Battalion, the 149th Aviation Regiments’ 1st Battalion is classified as an Attack Battalion. Recent accomplishments include the 1st Battalion being selected for a Valorous Unit Award for its service in Iraq between 22 August 2006 and 8 July 2007. B/1 – 149th also served in Operation Enduring Freedom when they deployed to Afghanistan in 2013. Today the unit is preparing to field the Army’s newest attack helicopter, the AH-64E “Apache Guardian”.

Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base is a joint installation shared by various active component and reserve component military units, as well as aircraft flight operations of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) under the aegis of the nearby Johnson Space Center. The host wing for the installation is the Texas Air National Guard’s 147th Attack Wing (147 ATKW). Opened in 1917, Ellington Field was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established after the United States entry into World War I. It is named for First Lieutenant Eric Ellington, a U.S. Army aviator who was killed in a plane crash in San Diego, California in 1913.
The United States Air Force’s 147th Attack Wing is an Air National Guard unit operationally-gained by the Air Combat Command. The 147 ATKW provides a 24/7 capability’s with MQ-9 Reaper Unmanned Aerial Systems. In its conduct of combat support sorties, the 147 ATKW provides theater and national-level leadership with critical real-time Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance and Air-to-Ground Munitions and strike capability. A collocated Air Support Operations Squadron provides terminal control for weapons employment in a Close Air Support scenarios, integrating combat air and ground operations.
