The B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet – powered strategic bomber. It has been operated by the United States Air Force since the 1950s. The bomber is capable of carrying up to 70,000 pounds of weapons, and has a typical combat range of more than 8,800 miles without aerial refueling. The B-52’s official name Stratofortress is rarely used; informally, the aircraft is commonly referred to as the BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fn’ /Fella). Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept them in service despite the development of more advanced strategic bombers, such as the Mach-2+ Convair B-58 Hustler, the canceled Mach-3 North American XB-70 Valkyrie, the variable-geometry Rockwell B-1 Lancer, and the stealthy Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit and B-21 Raider. A veteran of several wars, the B-52 has dropped only conventional munitions in combat.

Minot Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in Ward County, North Dakota, thirteen miles north of the city of Minot via U.S. Minot AFB is the home of two major wings: the 5th Bomb Wing and 91st Missile Wing, both of the Air Force Global Strike Command. Originally opened 68 years ago in 1957 as an Air Defense Command base, Minot AFB became a major Strategic Air Command base in the early 1960s, with both nuclear armed intercontinental ballistic missiles and manned bombers and aerial refueling aircraft.
