Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15 (HM-15) is a United States Navy helicopter squadron established in 1987 and based at Naval Station Norfolk. Known as the “Blackhawks,” the squadron operates the MH-53E Sea Dragon and is composed of both active duty and reserve personnel. HM-15 is the sister squadron to HM-14, the “Vanguard,” located just half a mile away at the same naval station.

The MH-53E Sea Dragon is the U.S. Navy’s premier heavy-lift helicopter, designed to execute critical mine countermeasure and heavy cargo missions. With its powerful three-engine design, the Sea Dragon can operate over long ranges, making it essential for maritime operations. Capable of towing minesweeping equipment and carrying substantial loads, it supports both fleet and shore-based logistics. Known for its durability and versatility, the MH-53E has played a vital role in ensuring safe naval passage and maintaining readiness in challenging environments. Its robust capabilities embody the Navy’s commitment to mission success across the globe. Variants of the original CH-53A Sea Stallion include the RH-53A/D, HH-53B/C, CH-53D, CH-53G, and MH-53H/J/M. The RH-53A and RH-53D were used by the US Navy for minesweeping. The U.S. Air Force’s HH-53B/C “Super Jolly Green Giant” was for special operations and combat rescue, and was first deployed during the Vietnam War. The Air Force’s MH-53H/J/M Pave Low helicopters were the last of the twin-engined H-53s and were equipped with extensive avionics upgrades for all-weather operation.
