The 1st Munitions Squadron (1 MUNS), known as the “Talons of the Eagle,” plays a critical role within the 1st Fighter Wing at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. Tasked with supporting the F-22 Raptor mission, the squadron ensures the readiness of training, combat, and homeland defense munitions for the 27th and 94th Fighter Generation Squadrons and the 71st Fighter Training Unit. Additionally, 1 MUNS provides logistical support to 35 custody accounts across the base and conducts continuous deployment training to maintain a lethal and versatile force. Nicknamed “Boom City,” their munitions storage area serves as the hub for their operations, with the mighty kraken as their mascot. Joint Base Langley–Eustis is a United States military facility located adjacent to Hampton and Newport News, Virginia. The base is an amalgamation of the United States Air Force’s Langley Air Force Base and the United States Army’s Fort Eustis which were merged on 1 October 2010. The base was established in accordance with congressional legislation implementing the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The legislation ordered the consolidation of the two facilities which were nearby, but separate military installations, into a single Joint Base, one of 12 formed in the United States as a result of the law.
