The 495th Fighter Generation Squadron (495th FGS), affectionately known as the “Valkyries,” has a distinguished history rooted in its origins as the 495th Aircraft Maintenance Unit (495th AMU), formerly a component of the esteemed 748th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (748th AMXS) stationed at RAF Lakenheath , United Kingdom. Upon its reactivation on October 1, 2021, under the banner of the 495th Aircraft Maintenance Unit (495 AMU), it marked a significant milestone as the pioneering overseas United States Air Force squadron entrusted with the operation of the Lockheed Martin F – 35A Lightning II, commencing operations on December 15, 2021. The transition was precipitated by the discontinuation of the 748th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (AMXS) on June 9, 2023, heralding the genesis of the esteemed 495th FGS, a testament to its enduring legacy and unwavering commitment to excellence in aerial operations.
