The legend of Navy coffee is built on thick, high-caffeine brews, the sacred rule to never wash the coffee pot so the “seasoning” builds up, and the historic 1914 ban on alcohol by Secretary of the Navy Josephus “Joe” Daniels, which made coffee the ultimate shipboard fuel. - The Unwashed Pot:Â Shipboard legend states that a proper Navy coffee pot is never scrubbed with soap; letting the old oils and residue build up is said to “season” the pot and make the next brew stronger.
- Cup of Joe: Popular military lore links the term “a cup of Joe” directly to Secretary Josephus Daniels banning alcohol on ships, leaving sailors to substitute their rum and grog rations with massive amounts of coffee, sarcastically named a “Cup of Josephus” or “Joe”.
- Galley Fuel:Â Described in sea stories as thick enough to “stand up at attention” or resembling a light syrup, naval coffee was traditionally brewed extra-strong in massive urns to keep watchstanders awake through grueling overnight shifts.
