NAS Barbers Point Hawaii VP-4

NAS Barbers Point Hawaii VP-4 Art.

This artwork honors Patrol Squadron 4 (VP-4), proudly known as the “Skinny Dragons”, a nickname born during a 1965 deployment to Japan when local waitresses mistook the squadron’s “Black Griffin” logo for a slender dragon—an identity that has endured ever since. VP-4 called NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii home for over 30 years, where generations of Skinny Dragons launched worldwide maritime patrol and reconnaissance missions. Flying the legendary P-3C Orion, the squadron safeguarded the Pacific theater and contributed to America’s undersea dominance and long-range patrol legacy. After departing Barbers Point in 1998, VP-4 continued its proud history at MCAS Kaneohe Bay before transitioning to NAS Whidbey Island, WA. This piece captures the heritage, spirit, and long-standing Hawaiian chapter of one of the Navy’s most storied patrol squadrons.
