Florennes AB Belgium 1st FS vintage style military aviation travel poster art by – Squadron Posters!
The 1st Fighter Squadron is a operational unit of the 2nd Wing Tactical at Florennes Air Base, Belgium. It operates the General Dynamics F-16A ‘Fighting Falcon,‘ and has begun transitioning to the F-35A ‘Lightning II.’ The history of the 1st FS began with the Compagnie des Aviateurs in 1913, and flew combat reconnaissance missions from the outbreak of WWI from Ypres, scoring its first aerial victory in the spring of 1915. In 1917, the squadron was officially redesignated as a fighter squadron and adapted Le Chardon, or Scottish thistle, as its official symbol. At the outbreak of WWII, the squadron mounted a last ditch defense against the Germans before being forced to continue the fight from England. The Stingers served with distinction in the RAF, fighting in many operations including the Battle of Brittan and Operation Overlord. Following WWII, the 1st was reestablished in Belgium at the former German base of Florennes . In 1949, Belgium became a founding member of NATO, and the Stingers trained heavily through the cold war to deter any regional threats. In 1990, the squadron transitioned to the F-16A “Viper,” and in 1997 tasted combat for the first time since WWII over the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Over the last two decades, the Stingers have participated in coalition operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq and Syria. They have also executed Air Policing missions supporting NATO allies in the Baltic States and Poland, as well as countless exercises throughout Europe, Africa and North America.
