VMF-122 officially became known as the “Crusaders” for the next several decades conducting combat operations in support of Khe Sahn and other offenses. During this time as VMF(AW) 122 transitioned to the f4-B it was designated Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 122. Throughout the 1980’s, 1990’s, and the 2000’s, VMFA-122 conducted multiple training deployments and combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. During this time, the squadron returned to its WWII name, “ The Werewolves”.
