The 388th Operations Support Squadron (388 OSS) is part of the 388th Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base, UT. Nestled against the Wasatch Range and thirty minutes north of Salt Lake City, the 388 OSS has a rich heritage and proud history beginning in 1942 at Gowen Field, ID as the 388th Bombardment Group. Throughout it’s history the 388th FW has flown the B-17, F-86, F-100, F-105, and F-4. In 1977 they were designated as Ops-1 for the F-16 at Hill AFB. 39 years later, 388th was again designated to support Ops-1 for the USAF’s newest 5th Gen multi-role fighter, the F-35A Lightning II. In 1977, the 388th became the first operational unit to fly the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Nearly 40 years later the 388th was again asked to host the first operational squadron, affectionately known as Ops-1, for the United States’ most advanced fighter ever built, the F-35A, and achieved Initial Operating Capability in August of 2016. Shortly thereafter, in 2017, the 388th Operations Support Squadron supported the first deployment of the F-35A to exercise RED FLAG, a EUCOM deployment, and culminated the year with a PACOM Theater Security Package deployment–continuing their legacy of answering the nations call whenever and wherever they are needed.
