Davis Monthan AFB 355th Wing Intelligence Art vintage style military aviation travel poster art by – Squadron Posters!
Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, located in Tucson, Arizona, is home to the 355th Wing and plays a key role in supporting combat missions, training operations, and aircraft maintenance. Known for its expansive aircraft storage facility, the base houses the Air Force’s “Boneyard,” where decommissioned military aircraft are stored and repurposed. The base supports a variety of units, including those focused on close air support, rescue operations, and electronic warfare. Its strategic location and mission diversity make Davis-Monthan AFB a vital hub for both Air Force operations and international joint exercises.
The 355th quickly gained acclaim as the “Steeple Morden Strafers,” a reference to its base in England and its lethal accuracy at low level. The fighter group destroyed or damaged 1,500 enemy planes, making it the top strafing outfit in the VIII Fighter Command during World War II. They provided fighter cover for Allied forces landing in Normandy on 6 June 1944, and afterwards hit transportation facilities to cut enemy supply lines. Hit fuel dumps, locomotives, and other targets in support of ground forces during the breakthrough at Saint-Lô in July.
