Cannon AFB 33d SOS GRYPHONS

Cannon AFB 33d SOS GRYPHONS poster art.

The 33 SOS has one of the longest histories in the Air Force, dating back to WWI, when the unit was activated as the 33 Aero Sqdn on June 12, 1917, and trained pilots for nearly two years. It was reconstituted and redesignated as the 33d Pursuit Squadron on March 24, 1923, and was organized as a Regular Army unit in 1909. It trained on new front-line aircraft for testing and evaluation until December 6, 1939, when it became a fighter Pursuit Sqdn. It was redesignated the 33d Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor) on 12 March 1941, then the 33d Fighter Squadron on 15 May 1942, until it was deactivated on 22 June 1945.
