The Eastern Air Defense Sector (EADS) is staffed predominately by New York Air Guardsmen, along with a Canadian Forces detachment, U.S. Army, Navy, Coast Guard liaison officers and civilian personnel. EADS’ primary mission is to counter all air threats to the EADS’ Area of Operations through vigilant detection, rapid warning and precise tactical control of NORAD and USNORTHCOM forces. EADS is located in upstate central New York, minutes away from the famous Adirondack mountain region. The city, Rome, gained a reputation as the “ Copper City” as its metal industries produced 10% of all copper in the US. The 224th Support Squadron’s mission statement is “Equip, enable and secure Command and Control capabilities for the air defense of America.” They provide and maintain high – quality long range data link Radio Frequency transmissions mediums.
