RAAF Base Townsville Queensland Australia 161st RS vintage style military aviation travel poster art by Squadron Posters!
RAAF Base Townsville (formerly RAAF Base Garbutt) is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) air base located in Garbutt, 2 nautical miles (3.7 km; 2.3 mi) west of Townsville in Queensland, Australia. It is the headquarters for No. 1 Wing Australian Air Force Cadets and, along with Lavarack Barracks, establishes Townsville as a key military centre. The base’s airfield is shared with the Townsville Airport.
The Hughes/McDonnell Douglas/Boeing AH-64 Apache is an American twin-turboshaft attack helicopter with a tailwheel-type landing gear and a tandem cockpit for a crew of two. Nose-mounted sensors help acquire targets and provide night vision. It carries a 30 mm (1.18 in) M230 chain gun under its forward fuselage and four hardpoints on stub-wing pylons for armament and stores, typically AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and Hydra 70 rocket pods. Redundant systems help it survive combat damage. “H-64 – E-V6” refers to the AH-64 Apache helicopter, specifically the latest advanced Version 6 (V6) modernization of the AH-64E Apache, a powerful multi-role attack helicopter known for enhanced sensors, network-centric capabilities, and strong performance in anti-drone operations (Operation Fly Swatter) and Multi-Domain Operations (MDO). The V6 represents significant software and hardware upgrades, improving its lethality, survivability, and ability to team with unmanned systems for future battlefields.
