Fleet Base West Garden Island HMAS Waller vintage style military aviation travel poster art by – Squadron Posters!
Commissioned on 10 July 1999, HMAS Waller is the third of six Collins Class submarines to enter service with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Designed and built by the Swedish Navy, these submarines are as quiet as modern technology allows. Waller features a high-performance hull form, automated controls, high shock resistance, and an efficient weapons handling and discharge system. It operates silently on electric power, supplied by battery banks charged by three onboard diesel generators. Based at Fleet Base West in Western Australia, Waller has successfully conducted a wide range of defense and surveillance missions across the region for the Royal Australian Navy.
Named for Captain Hector Waller, the boat was laid down in 1992, and launched in 1997. Despite the RAN initially refusing to accept the submarine for service, Waller has demonstrated the capabilities of the Collins class against surface and submarine targets during several international war-games.
The full name of the Naval Base HMAS Stirling is “Her Majesty’s Australian Ship” or “His Majesty’s Australian Ship Stirling”. The base is located on Garden Island in Western Australia and is named after Admiral Sir James Stirling, a Royal Navy officer and colonial administrator.
