The 38th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron (38 EAS), more commonly known as “Delta Squadron” was a provisional United States Air Force unit established in 2008. It was assigned to the 86th Operations Group, stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. The 38 EAS was unique in that it was comprised of personnel rotating from various Air National Guard (ANG) and Air Force Reserve (AFRES) units equipped with C-130E/H Hercules and C-130J Super Hercules transports.
The mission of the 38 EAS was to augment Ramstein-based airlift assets in support of USEUCOM theater airlift requirements. The “DeIta Squadron” originally began operations from Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England, but in 1990 moved to Rhein-Main Air Base, Germany in response to increase demands for airlift missions to the Balkan region. In 1994, the unit relocated to Ramstein AB, Germany and remained there until it’s inactivation in 2010.Today, ANG and AFRC augment USEUCOM theater airlift with C-130s through the “Silver Arrow” program.
