The 815th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) (815 BS), was a unit of the 483rd Bombardment Group (483 BG), 5th Wing (5 WG), 15th Air Force (15 AF) at Sterparone Airfield, Italy 1944 to 1945. It operated the B-17G Flying Fortress. It provided strategic day light bombing throughout the Mediterranean and European Theater of Operations. The squadron is now designated the 815th Airlift Squadron (815 AS) with the mission of providing theater airlift. The mission of the 815 AS is to conduct airlift, airdrop, and aeromedical evacuation operations. The squadron name is the “Flying Jennies”. Keesler AFB, established in 1941, is located in Biloxi, Mississippi along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and is less than one hour from New Orleans.
Sterparone Airfield is an abandoned World War II military airfield in Italy. It was located 11.1 kilometers south-southeast of San Severo, in the Province of Foggia. The airfield was abandoned and dismantled after the end of the war in 1945.
