It is approximately 488 km (303 miles) northeast of Bangkok. The Laotian border is about 60 kilometers (40 miles) directly east. The facility is also used as a civil airport.
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor fighter/fighter-bomber originally developed for United States Naval aviation by McDonnell Aircraft. It first entered service in 1960. Proving highly adaptable, it was also adopted by the U.S. Marine’s and Air Force, and by the mid-1960s had become a major part of their respective air wings. Reconnaissance RF-4Cs made their debut in Vietnam on 30 October 1965, flying the hazardous post-strike reconnaissance missions.
