The USS Thomas Hudner (DDG-116) is the first Flight IIA variant of the Arleigh Burke Class Guided Missile Destroyer. The ship was commissioned on December 1st, 2018 and is homeported in Mayport, Florida. The ship’s namesake, LTJG Thomas J. Hudner Jr. was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions trying to save his wingman, Ensign Jesse L. Brown during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War. The ship bears the call sign “Whistling Death” due to the ships heritage with the F4U Corsair which coined the nickname. The USS Thomas Hudner has had a profound global impact by downing enemy drones and ballistic missiles in the Middle East resulting in hundreds of lives saved.
