Nellis AFB 8th WPS vintage style military aviation travel poster art by – Squadron Posters!
The 8th Weapons Squadron is a part of the USAF Weapons School at Nellis AFB, NV. It instructs operators from the E-3G, E-2D, EC-130H, RC-135V/W and Control and Reporting Center to become Weapons Officers. Their students support the USAF Combat Air Forces and prepare them for real-world operations, exercises and deployments. Nellis is 30 minutes away from the iconic Las Vegas Strip, Freemont Street Experience and an hour from Lake Meade and Mt Charleston. Their squadron is named “The Barnyard” based off of our heritage.
Nellis Air Force Base (“Nellis” colloq.) is a United States Air Force installation in southern Nevada. Nellis hosts air combat exercises such as Exercise Red Flag and close air support exercises such as Green Flag-West flown in “Military Operations Area airspace”, associated with the nearby Nevada Test and Training Range. The base also has the Combined Air and Space Operations Center-Nellis. The USAF Fighter Weapons School was designated on 1 January 1954 from the squadron when the Air Crew School graduated its last Combat Crew Training Class (the primary Weapons School mission was gunnery instructor training). In the mid-1950s for Operation Teapot nuclear testing, 1 of the 12 Zone Commanders was based at Nellis AFB for community liaison/public relations (weapons for other atomic tests were stored at Nellis). Air Training Command suspended training at the Nellis fighter weapons school in late 1956 because of the almost total failure of the F-86 Sabre aircraft used at Nellis, and during 1958 ATC discontinued its Flying Training and Technical Training.
