Aeronca LB NC16526 (1936) vintage style military aviation travel poster art by – Squadron Posters!
The Aeronca L was a 1930s American cabin monoplane designed and built, in small numbers, by Aeronca Aircraft. It differed significantly from other Aeronca planes by the use of radial engines, streamlining, and a cantilever low wing. Quite unlike other Aeronca designs, the Model L was a “cantilever” (no external struts for bracing) low-wing monoplane, that featured side-by-side seating in a completely enclosed cabin. The design reflected the greater attention being paid to aerodynamics in the period, including large wheel spats for the fixed undercarriage and a Townend ring for the engine. The aircraft was of mixed-construction with a welded steel fuselage and wings with spruce spars and ribs, all covered with fabric.
The 1936 Aeronca L models were low-wing cabin monoplanes with seating for two. These coupe-type airplanes featured sharply tapered cantilever wings and rakish cantilever landing gear fully encased in large metal “pants.” The overall effect was a streamlined look that was popular in many vehicle designs in the 1930s. The sport-type L series was offered with 3 different engines, with the LA and LB powered with LeBlond engines of 75 and 80 HP. Construction was a mixture of fabric-covered steel tubing and wooden formers with sheet metal leading edges. The cabin was a Pyralin “greenhouse” with amber-tinted top panels. A “Townend” ring provided a clean finish over the 5 cylinders of the rubber-mounted engine.
Clyde H. Swan of Milwaukee, Wisconsin flew NC16526 for Civil Air Patrol as a wartime industrial courier.
