C Co 158th Aviation Regiment was activated as a 20 ship UH-1 company at Fort Carson, Colorado on 25 May 1968. In the Vietnam war, C Co. supported operations in A Shau Valley, including actions at Hamburger Hill. The nickname “Phantoms” later originated from Charlie Company, 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regimen. Assault operations in Somalia were assembled around the Phantoms, which formed the nucleus of Team Courage and deployed in July of 1993.On 25 September 1993 (a week prior to Operation Gothic Serpent) a Phantom UH-60 was shot down in Mogadishu. SGT Eugene Williams and two others were killed in the crash. The Phantoms deployed to Kuwait in February 2003, where they were reflagged as Charlie Company, 5th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment. Today, Charlie company 5-101 “Phantoms” serve in the world’s premiere Air Assault Battalion. Phantoms are ready to deliver Air Assault troops the world over so they may close with and destroy the enemies of the united states.
