Strike Fighter Squadron 27 (VFA-27), also known as the “Royal Maces”, is an F/A-18E Super Hornet strike fighter squadron operating from Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan, and attached to Carrier Air Wing 5 (CVW 5) . The Royal Maces were commissioned as Attack Squadron 27 (VA-27), originally designated the Chargers, on September 1, 1967 flying the Vought A-7A Corsair II. VFA-27 transitioned to the F/A-18E Super Hornet in October 2004 and promptly continued their record of excellence with back to back Naval Air Forces Pacific Battle Efficiency Awards in 2005 and 2006. The Royal Maces misison is to provide combat ready aircraft in support of our nation’s strategic objectives. They remain prepared to “fight and win anywhere, anytime”.
