When the United States first established an orbiting spy program, ground antennas were a crucial component of the network required to command those satellites. Over the decades that followed, those antennas were upgraded and expanded to locations all around the globe. Today, that legacy continues under the control of the 22nd Space Operations Squadron, a unit assigned to Space Delta Six following the U.S. Space Force structure change, headquartered at Schriever AFB, CO. 22 SOPS provides global access to space for mission partners to perform satellite command and control by developing, publishing and enforcing the Space Access Tasking Order, as well as directing and monitoring all aspects of enterprise operations for users on the Satellite Control Network. The SCN connects the heavens and the earth via a network of antennas specifically designed to interoperate with the Department of Defense and civil space agencies’ satellite programs. 22 SOPS additionally coordinates launch and on-orbit operations of the DoD and other national agencies’ satellites in support of warfighters, intelligence community users, the President, and the Secretary of Defense, as well as NASA’s space mission.
