Helicopter Training Squadron EIGHT (HT-8), based aboard Naval Air Station Whiting Field, is the United States Navy’s oldest helicopter training squadron, and also bears the honor of being the oldest helicopter squadron in continuous Naval service. For more than sixty three years the squadron’s motto has been “The Best Helicopter Pilots in the World are Trained Here.” Its mission is to provide primary and advanced helicopter training for United States Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Allied Student Naval Aviators selected for rotary-wing designation. The squadron’s mission is Advanced Helicopter Training. HT-8 flies the TH-57 Bell 206 JetRanger. The unit generally uses the call sign “Eight Ball” over the radio. The three basic colors of HT-8’s patch – red, white and blue – represent the colors of the U.S. flag, and are indicative of HT-8’s nickname, “America’s Squadron“!
