Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort or MCAS Beaufort is a United States Marine Corps air base located three miles northwest of the central business district of Beaufort, South Carolina. About 4,700 personnel serve at the station, and it is home to Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet and fighter-attack squadrons. July 17, 2015 marks the one year anniversary of the F-35B Lightning II’s arrival to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 (VMFAT-501) relocation to the air station from Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, to train pilots for the first operational F-35 squadron and the Marines’ military instructor cadre. Serving as the hub for F-35B pilot training, MCAS Beaufort will also host international pilots flying the short takeoff and vertical landing F-35 variant.
